Turmeric log 9: 30th OF APRIL

 I know it's not  the 30th of April, but that is when this post was due, so let's just go with it eh! 👍

FLOWER TIME

Finally after 2 1/2 years of growing turmeric, I'm getting somewhere. This is the first crop that has produced the awesome flowers I've been waiting for.

In the past I have been able to produce a good amount of turmeric per plant, but one of my main goals was to get the plants through to flowering. If starting from a small rhizome, this can take a few years of growing on while still harvesting the smaller rhizomes (or fingers) for consumption or to replant. The other important factor is they need 10 months of warm soil conditions. I have managed so far to get over this hurdle by starting them off in a glasshouse in early August before transplanting into 10sqm garden boxes. As the temperature drops again they are protected by a polytunnel set up.

Next year as the crop expands again, I will be looking at heating the soil through a series of pipes heated by composting.

In the previous blog I have photos of the first five turmeric just starting out. They were taken on the 20th of January 2020. Now here's the catch. Apparently these things need a good 10 months of warm, frost free climate. So, Houston  we had a problem. They had been planted, late November, in a fairly frost free area thanks to a coastal sea breeze. This meant they only had 6-7 months of growing, but still provided me with a good crop to harvest and experiment with. As well as more than 3 times as many rhizomes, which are already on there way. Unfortunately, because of there shorter than natural growing time, they didn't get the chance to show off there awesome flowers.  The smaller rhizomes (fingers) where harvested, and the rest put back into stock to increase next years harvest. Introduction: In the beginning ......

 .......there was TURMERIC!!! Not the beginning, beginning, but the beginning of my journey into plants with major health and healing properties.  It all started a short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, when a workmate of mine was explaining the ingredients of some sort of health tonic smoothie thing he'd concocted. Turmeric log 7: A SUPER BRIEF UPDATE part 2

  Time to cover the turmeric beds. Still enough heat during the day to keep the humidity up with the help of some light mist sprinklers.
