Introduction: In the beginning ......

 .......there was TURMERIC!!!

Not the beginning, beginning, but the beginning of my journey into plants with major health and healing properties.

It all started a short time ago in a galaxy not so far away, when a workmate of mine was explaining the ingredients of some sort of health tonic smoothie thing he'd concocted. One of the ingredients was fresh turmeric root. Turns out, the person he was sourcing it from, was importing it from Fiji. Which is where most of our turmeric comes from. It just got me thinking, if it's that good for you, then why not grow your own, top quality. chemical free, organic turmeric at home. So I did.

                                                                   !!!BOOM!!!

Early November 2019, I was made aware of a turmeric plant that had been sat in a pot for a couple of years, hidden away in the backyard, and may or may not have produced any signs of life in this time. This was the opportunity I needed to have a crack Nigel. So one quick google and I was an expert.

Turns out I wasn't. I split the rhizomes into 8 pieces. Two were planted in a pot and the other six in a garden bed. The garden bed was very damp with a clay base. Just what turmeric don't want, which looking back was quite obvious, being a root vegetable and all. So three of the six came up, as did the two in the pot. Now I'm keen, I needed to get more, so I did.

                                                                  !!!BANG!!!

                                                                    !!!BANG!!!
                                                                     !!!BOOM!!!

So by April I had 30 plants cranking. Unfortunately I think they were planted too late to get any flowers to form. either that or covid, its still under analysis. Fortunately we did get 300grms of golden turmeric powder and 91 rhizomes to plant for a 2021 harvest. Which are just showing signs of life now.

I was going to make this a fortnightly blog but I have too much to rave about, so next week I'll update where we're at on the turmeric scene.

  1. I didn't realise you grow it in New Zealand. Great blog.

  2. Great blog. When you have success would like to try growing some in our food forest. The climate in Nelson /Tasman is opening up opportunities to grow more of what we import.

  3. Enjoying blog and comments. My husband and I have now been on organic tumeric and black pepper capsules for a month. Thanks to your blog. I have to say we have never felt healthier. Both suffer joint pain and stiffness. Day and night activities increased and not falling asleep in the chair each night. Fountain of youth elixir . Now we do have to grow our own as too expensive, no way we will give up the turmeric. It seems the black pepper combination is the secret. Goodluck at reaching the masses
